Salinas teacher's emotional return to Nepal captured in documentary - MontereyHerald.com :

image He would try to explain things in the news. He was my friend, he was my mentor, he was head of the household," he said. "I can't imagine what my life there would have been like without Krishna Bhakta." Krishna's wife, Mohan Devi, prepared two meals each day on an open indoor fire that invariably filled the house with smoke. Their children two sons and a daughter were students in Deutschle's science classes. The young physicist also became the village physician, using Peace Corps medications to treat illnesses, injuries and infections for anyone with a need. People often trekked days from neighboring villages to see him. Almost 3 1/2 decades later, he recruited Dickinson and Hutman both experienced filmmakers to chronicle his return for a documentary, a record of whatever he was going to find. Dickinson, an old friend who once summited Mount Everest, agreed to work cheap, but needed to be paid in advance. Hutman, a single mom with three children and a dog, originally said no. Leaving her family for several weeks was problematic, and the workload associated with making a full-length feature documentary was daunting. "But the more I thought about it, of the more I realized it was something I really wanted to do," said Hutman, who, as a schoolgirl, had spent time in Haiti and Sri Lanka. "It just took some time for me to think it through and put the puzzle pieces together to make it all work." What ensued was an eventful trek through a unique and colorful developing nation, and, for Deutschle, a journey back through time.
